What the market data says about building your first AI agent: which job to hand it first, the steps from source content to launch, and tools with a free way to start.

How do you build an AI agent for your business?

Pick one job with a clear measure, such as answering support questions from your help docs. Give a no-code agent builder your own content, test it on real customer questions, then launch it with a handoff to a person for anything it can’t answer. Tools like CustomGPT.ai and Botpress put a first support agent live without code. Based on FalcoScan data updated 4 October 2026, Agents is the least crowded of the five markets where businesses put agents to work, with an average saturation of 31 out of 100 across 409 active products.

How crowded are the AI agent markets right now?

Businesses put agents to work in five FalcoScan markets more than any others: general agents, customer support, sales, marketing and voice. Here is how they compare.

Opportunity and saturation are 0 to 100 averages across each market's products. Free tier and API are shares of active products; wrappers are the share scoring 60 or more on wrapper risk. Source: FalcoScan catalog, data updated 4 October 2026.

What does the data show?

  • Agents is the most open of the five. Its average saturation is 31, against 49 in Marketing, the most crowded. Its average opportunity is 73. Buyers get real choice, and vendors still compete on price and features.
  • Momentum is broad. 275 of the 409 active agent products, 67%, are rated hot or rising.
  • Free starts are easiest in Agents and Voice (71% and 69% of products offer a free tier) and hardest in Support (38%) and Marketing (38%).
  • Support has the most thin products. 40% of its products score 60 or more on wrapper risk, meaning they are a thin layer over someone else's general model, against 5% in Voice. Ask a vendor what it built itself.
  • Connecting is rarely the problem. 84% of Support products offer an API, so linking an agent to your help desk, CRM or inbox is usually possible.

Which job should your first agent do?

Start where your content already exists and success is easy to count. For most businesses that is support.

JobWhat the agent doesHow you measure it
SupportAnswers customer questions from your help docs, policies and websiteShare of questions resolved without a person
SalesResearches leads, writes outreach and follows up across email and LinkedInReplies and meetings booked
MarketingPlans, drafts and schedules content in your brand’s voicePosts shipped and hours saved each week
VoiceAnswers and makes phone calls with a natural voiceCalls handled and calls passed to staff

How do you build one, step by step?

  1. Choose one job and one number. “Answer billing questions” measured by “resolved without a person” is a job. “Help customers” is not.
  2. Gather the source content. Help center articles, policies, product pages and past tickets with good answers. The agent can only be as right as this material.
  3. Pick a builder that fits your team. No-code builders let you upload content and go live the same day. Developer platforms give you more control over actions and integrations.
  4. Limit it to your sources. Tell the agent to answer only from your content and to say so when it doesn't know.
  5. Test with real questions. Run 50 recent customer questions through it before anyone else sees it, and fix the gaps in your content, not just the prompt.
  6. Launch with a handoff. Put it on one channel first, with a clear route to a person for refunds, complaints and anything it can't answer.
  7. Read the transcripts every week. The questions it misses tell you what to add next.

What makes a first agent fail?

  • It answers from outside your content. An agent that guesses is worse than no agent. Restrict it to your sources.
  • There is no way out. Customers who can't reach a person stop trusting the channel. Make the handoff easy to find.
  • Nobody reads what it says. The first month of transcripts is where most of the value is.

How does FalcoScan measure these markets?

Every product in the catalog carries a saturation score and an opportunity score, each from 0 to 100, and a market's figures are the averages across its products, recomputed every day. Momentum counts products rated hot or rising. The wrapper share is the share of products scoring 60 or more on wrapper risk, a measure of how much a product depends on someone else's model. Questions people ask
