What Are Y Combinator's 2026 AI Startups Building?

We read the website of every active AI company in Y Combinator's 2026 batches. 189 sell AI software, and most of it is infrastructure for agent builders or agents that run one industry's operations.

8 October 2026 · 7 min read · Data frozen 8 October 2026

Y Combinator's 2026 AI startups are mostly building two things: infrastructure for teams that build and run AI agents, and agents that run day-to-day operations in a specific industry. Of the 298 active AI companies in YC's four 2026 batches, 189 are AI software products. 58 of those sell to AI builders, and 55 sit in Automation, Finance and Healthcare. Not one is a writing, image or music tool, and 86 of the 295 companies we read are not software at all.

The short version

  • 189 of 295 researched YC 2026 AI companies (64.1%) are software products that fit a FalcoScan market. All 189 are now listed on FalcoScan.
  • 58 of the 189 (30.7%) are built for teams building AI: compute, model routing, evaluation, sandboxes, memory and controls for agents.
  • Automation (29), Coding (26), Agents (22), AI Models (22) and Finance (18) hold 61.9% of the products. Writing, Image, Music, Design and Support hold none.
  • 68.3% charge from the start or sell through a sales call, against 42.9% across the FalcoScan catalog.
  • 86 companies (29.2%) are robots, chips, drones, biotech, space hardware or AI-run service firms rather than software.

Which companies does this report cover?

Every company in Y Combinator's public directory that is in a 2026 batch (Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall), is marked active, and is tagged AI or artificial intelligence: 298 companies on 3 October 2026. 3 were already on FalcoScan. We read the website of each of the other 295, and listed every one that sells an AI software product fitting one of FalcoScan's 29 markets.

Why are so many building for other AI builders?

58 of the 189 products (30.7%) are sold to teams that build or run AI agents and models, not to the people the agents work for. They sit across five FalcoScan markets, which is why no single market shows how large the group is.

Some run the compute: isoquant and OpenRelay sell inference, and Conifer and Tracer send each request to the cheapest model that can handle it. Some test the work: Hue replays real production tasks, Kimpton builds evaluation environments, and CoArena ranks computer-use agents. A large share serve coding agents in particular: Boxes.dev gives them cloud machines, GitCafe gives them Git hosting, and Maxxwell lets one person manage many at once.

A smaller group decides what agents are allowed to do. Salus checks each action before it runs, Agentic Fabriq gives agents identities and audit trails, and Inkbox gives them their own email and phone numbers. Together they describe one buyer: the team that operates a fleet of agents and needs them to be cheap, tested and accountable.

Which industries are getting agents that run operations?

The second pattern is software that takes over operational work in one industry. Automation is the largest market in the set, with 29 products, and almost all of them are built for a single trade: TrueMile for trucking, Skymerse for airline flight planning, Zaplar for hotels and Invertix for energy infrastructure.

Finance (18) leans toward regulated back-office work: Qlo handles commercial underwriting, Hesper AI investigates insurance claims, and Zomma clears KYC and transaction alerts for payment firms. Healthcare (8) follows the same line: ClaimGlide files and appeals prior authorizations, and Elite answers calls for clinic front offices.

What are YC's 2026 AI startups not building?

Consumer and creative tools are almost absent. The 189 products include no Writing, Image, Music, Design or Support tools, two Video tools and one Social tool. Across the whole FalcoScan catalog those are some of the largest markets: Image alone has 393 active products and Writing 321.

Do these bets match where FalcoScan sees room to build?

Mostly, yes. The markets YC 2026 companies chose score high on FalcoScan's opportunity measure and low on saturation, and very few products in them are thin wrappers around a public model. The markets they skipped score the other way.

Average opportunity and saturation (0 to 100) and the share of products flagged as likely wrappers, per market. FalcoScan catalog, 8 October 2026.

Two markets break the pattern. Coding is crowded (saturation 44.4, a quarter of products flagged as wrappers), yet it drew 26 YC 2026 products. 16 of them build tools for coding agents, and most of the rest are agents that do engineering work themselves, such as testing, incident response and code review, rather than another coding assistant. Music scores high on opportunity with low saturation, and drew none.

How do YC's 2026 AI startups charge?

189 YC 2026 products and 7,280 active catalog products with a pricing model on record. FalcoScan catalog, 8 October 2026.

68.3% of YC 2026 products are paid with no free tier, a group that includes products sold only through a demo or a sales conversation. Across the catalog, freemium is the most common model. This fits the buyers above: an operations team in a regulated industry, or a company running agents in production, buys through a contract rather than a free trial.

Which YC 2026 AI companies are not software at all?

86 of the 295 companies we read (29.2%) do not sell a software product that fits a FalcoScan market. They include robots for data centers and labs, AI chips, drones and defense hardware, satellites, wearables, AI drug discovery, and a newer kind of company: firms that sell a service run largely by AI, such as a debt collection agency, an accounting firm and a law-firm operator. FalcoScan does not list them today, but they show where AI money is going beyond software.

How did FalcoScan build this report?

We read Y Combinator's public company directory on 3 October 2026 and kept every active company in a 2026 batch tagged as AI. For each one we read the company's own website to confirm what it sells today, assign one of FalcoScan's 29 markets and record its pricing model. Every listing passed the catalog's duplicate check (one listing per product). Market averages come from the live catalog on 8 October 2026; how each measure is calculated is on the methodology page. Grouping the 58 builder-infrastructure products is our own classification of each product's stated customer.
